Course objectives

This modular course gives a basic insight into the European Union, its legal framework, and its institutions. It will focus on European social policy and industrial relations on the basis of the relevant case law and legislation.

The EU's ambitious agenda in this field sets out to adapt the European social model to the radical transformation of Europe's economy and society. It aims to contribute to the Union's overall objective of strengthening economic performance, creating more and better jobs and making the most of the opportunities offered by the knowledgebased society.

Besides an introduction into the general principles of European Union law, several topics will be examined, such as: fundamental social rights, discrimination, free movement of workers, freedom to provide services, workers’ participation, collective bargaining and social dialogue, restructuring of enterprises, employment and labour market policies, international partners (ILO).

Entry requirements

Students should have a solid high school education, curiosity and interest for the European Union.

Teaching method

The course will be offered in the form of lectures in which students are given the opportunity to interact through discussions. Apart from a few introductory lectures, the course consists of tutorials. An active participation in these tutorials requires a thorough reading of cases of the European Court of Justice and other European texts. Seminars will be organised at the EU Commission in Brussels and at the ILO in Geneva.

Assessment

Students are required to write a short paper on a topic of their choice.

Course material
