Course objectives

 

The purpose of this course is to develop insights and guidelines of how to deal with cultural differences in a constructive way. The course will discuss 1) the meaning of culture and its relevance for organizations, 2) cross-cultural encounters within a team and its challenges for teamwork; and 3) how individuals come across multiculturalism and their ways to deal with cultural differences. Throughout the course, the student 1) acquires knowledge and insights necessary to understand the dynamics of intercultural encounters; 2) develops a critical perspective, able to identify underlying issues such as power, language and differences in interest that are related to cultural differences and 3) is able to critically reflect on behaviours and attitudes that facilitate or inhibit intercultural encounters at the workplace.

Teaching method

 

Lectures, case studies, experiential exercises, group discussions.

Assessment

 

Written exam with intermediate evaluation through assignments, presentations and paper.
