Department of Speech Language Therapy and Audiology

Introduction

The Department of Speech Language Therapy and Audiology began providing a Speech Language Therapy degree in 1956, further complementing it by a degree in Audiology in 1996.

At present, the department runs a professional BA in Speech Language Therapy and Audiology. The Department’s graduates are either experts in speech and language disorders, or in clinical audiology and very often form professional teams with school managements, teachers, social workers, educators, physicians and psychologists, or work as private practitioners.

The professional BA in Speech Language Therapy and Audiology offers two majors:

  • The Speech Language Therapy Major focuses on speech and language disorders (articulation, voice, fluency), as well as on learning disorders, including dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia.

  • The Audiology Major focuses on clinical audiology, hearing aids and rehabilitation.

The Department also offers a postgraduate in ‘Fluency Disorders’ and a course on ‘Multilingual Children with Communication Disorders'.

At the same time the Department coordinates an LLP Intensive Programme, in which 18 departments of Speech Language Therapy from 12 European countries participate. Moreover, between 2006 and 2008 the department has developed a European teaching module ‘European Clinical Specialisation on Fluency and Fluency Disorders (ECSF)’, in collaboration with SLT departments in Belgium, Malta, Ireland, Sweden and Germany.

As of 2008 the Department will run an international English programme for exchange students. The programme consists of ten courses on professional contexts in Europe, clinical practice, pragmatics and language use, multilingualism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and voice, and is held during each autumn semester.
