The focus in this teaching unit will be on language pragmatics.
First of all a general framework of the different components of pragmatics (context – communicative functions – presupposition – social organisation of discourse) will be outlined, based on Roth & Spekman’s model. After that an overview of the different pragmatic language impairments in children, adolescents and adults will be given.
The higher mentioned framework serves as the basis for the assessment of language use. The general principles of pragmatic assessment will be discussed, as well as some existing direct and indirect diagnostic procedures. Special attention will be given to the assessment and the analysis of narratives, being one of the most complex and clinically interesting communicative functions.
An intervention approach based on pragmatics will be the last topic to study. The general principles of language therapy focused on language use will be discussed, as well as practical therapy guidelines and specific programs for training specific aspects of language pragmatics. Special emphasis will also be given to narrative based intervention.
