Health and Insurance

Health Insurance

Since medical care can be extremely expensive, foreign students must take out a health insurance. They should inquire before leaving home whether their home insurance covers all medical costs in Belgium.

Students from the European Union and students from countries that have a health insurance agreement with Belgium can take out an insurance with a local health service upon arrival ('ziekenfonds' or 'mutualiteit' ) without paying a supplementary fee. All they need to bring is a document from their home health service (E128 form). Students must report for registration with a local branch of their health insurance federation at the beginning of their stay in Antwerp.

Students from countries without health insurance agreement with Belgium should arrange insurance through a private agency in their home country.

They can also take out an insurance upon arrival at Lessius Hogeschool at a reasonable price. Contact: Wouter Van Hoe (wouter.vanhoe@lessius.eu | 03 241 08 13).

Exchange students from Russia, Belarus and Morocco are offered free medical insurance by Lessius Hogeschool. The latter does not cover teeth protheses or treatment of chronic diseases.

Refunds

With the doctors’ and/or the hospital bills you can turn to a local health service branch. Part of the bill (the percentage depends on what treatment you received) will be refunded to you in cash or transferred into your bank account.

Pharmacy

As opposed to other countries, medication and certain health products can only be bought in pharmacies.

A list of all pharmacies can be found in the Yellow Pages ('Gouden Gids', under the heading 'Apothekers'). 'Apotheken' tend to be closed on Saturdays and are always closed on Sunday. However, a limited number of pharmacists have weekend and night duty. You can call upon them for urgent medication. A supplement will be charged. You will find the weekly list of pharmacists on night and weekend duty in each pharmacy and in newspapers and freebie papers.

First Aid

The first aid department can be found:

  • Campus Carolus: at reception
  • Campus Sanderus: in the library
  • Campus St. Andries: in the library

General Practioners

A list of GPs can be found in the Yellow Pages under the heading 'Doctors in de geneeskunde'.
Weekends, only a limited number of GPs are on duty. They will be listed on the answering machine of your GP or in newspapers and freebie papers.
