Department of Technology

Introduction

The Department of Technology originated with the merger of three independent institutes in Brussels and Mechelen in 1995. The current programme in electronics-ICT has its roots in the National Radio and Film Institute in Brussels. The programmes in automotive engineering and mechanical design and production technology go back to the Cardinal Mercier Institute in Schaarbeek (Brussels). The programme in electro-mechanics was created at De Nayer Institute to meet the need for technical engineers to rebuild the country after the First World War.

1976 saw the creation of “Labo De Nayer”, an independent research laboratory accredited by the government that runs tests for the industry and the government. The laboratory, which boasts a division of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) certification, provides consultancy on technical matters and does applied, industrial research.

At present the Department of Technology runs four professional BA programmes:

  • BA in automotive engineering,
  • BA in electro-mechanics,
  • BA in electronics - ICT,
  • BA in mechanical design and production technology.

The Department is involved in an Intermediary Network of Higher Technology Education and closely collaborates with the Institut Universitaire de Technologie de Blagnac (Toulouse, France), the Institute of Technology Tallaght (Dublin, Ireland) and the Haagse Hogeschool (The Hague, Netherlands). The partners in the network have co-ordinated their programmes so as to facilitate student and staff mobility.
