Department of Applied Psychology | International Programme

We offer an international programme with nine English courses that add up to 30 ECTS. The programme requires a basic knowledge of the main fields in psychology. Signing up for only some of the courses is also an option. If you master Dutch you can also attend the regular courses taught in Dutch.

Eight courses are organized by the department of applied psychology. The course "Interculturality and the European Union" is more general and is organized in cooperation with the Department of Speech Language Therapy and Audiology.

The following courses are taught in the autumn semester of the academic year 2010-2011:

Courses

Behavioural problems | ECTS: 3

For boys, behavioural problems are the most common reason for seeking psychological help; for girls, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder are the second most frequent reason. After an introduction to the diagnostics of behavioural problems, this course will focus on counselling and treatment. We will discuss interventions from different psychological perspectives that aim to reduce these symptoms. Students learn to critically reflect on the application of these interventions by analyzing cases.

Ethical issues in psychology | ECTS: 3

Each psychologist will be confronted in his work with ethical dilemmas. If he is a scientist, he will have to think about the ethical aspects of his research. An occupational psychologist must think about the far-reaching consequences about his advice (not) to hire an employee. A psychotherapist can be confronted with dilemmas about confidentiality, role confusion or difficult decisions about interventions or ending of a therapy.

During this course we will focus on ethical dilemmas. The students will get to know the ethical codes of their country, while the starting point will be the metacode of the European Federation of Psychologists' Associations (EFPA). One of the methods of getting to know the ethical codes is to analyze cases with other students. The students learn to reason ethically in a methodical way, while staying aware of the complexity of the situation.

Psychology in Europe | ECTS: 4

In this course students will get to know the working field of psychology as it is organized in Belgium. How is the health care system organized? What is the place of psychologists in it? To make this more concrete, we will visit several Belgian work settings in the clinical, educational and organizational field. In assignments the student is asked to compare aspects of the Belgian profession with the organization of these matters in their home country.
