Panel organizers: Paul Gillaerts & Elizabeth de Groot
Genre research has recently shown a growing interest in the evolution and merging of genres and in the use of new media, such as email and internet. Bhatia's recent plea for a critical genre analysis that takes the concept of interdiscursivity more seriously, widens the perspective of genre research to the more innovative and creative genres (Bhatia, Flowerdew & Jones, 2008). In this genre panel the convenors aim to bring together researchers whose interest is in taking an interdiscursive approach to business genres. We welcome research on both established genres and new genres within the ever-changing business context. The panel will (1) focus on the interaction between genres, (2) explore genre sets, systems and repertoires, and (3) put issues of generic integrity and genre mixing, embedding and bending at the heart of the discussion. Since genre research entails multiple perspectives (Bhatia, 2002), both qualitative and quantitative methodologies will be incorporated in the panel.
