Identity in Organizational Settings

Panel organizers: Dorien Van De Mieroop & Jonathan Clifton

Identity, either institutional or individual, is a crucial part of (business) communication. In any given situation, identities are being evoked, either consciously or unconsciously, in strategic ways. As such, they are an essential aspect of the discursive processes that constitute, and are constituted by, organizations. Recognising that identity is central to organisation, this panel seeks to explore ways in which identities are constructed and mobilized in the workplace.

Contributions to the panel are situated in various research traditions that take a broadly discursive approach to identity and which show a commitment to data-driven and empirical analyses. Similarly, data come from diverse sources, such as, for example, transcripts of naturally-occurring workplace interaction, company literature or interviews with practitioners or stakeholders. By welcoming these different angles, we not only aim to stress the diverse perspectives one can have on a broad topic such as identity in organizational settings, but we also hope to gain a deeper insight into the concept of identity and discuss the analytical challenges of this topic.
